Frequently Asked Questions

Turning Leaf Counseling provides therapy for individuals and partners ages 18 and older, with sessions available in person or via a secure, HIPAA‑compliant online platform. All clinicians offer talk therapy, while some providers also offer body‑based trauma modalities such as Somatic Experiencing and mind–body trauma processing through EMDR. Our practice is LGBTQIA+ affirming and welcoming to polyamorous and kink‑involved clients. We also integrate Mindfulness‑Based CBT, Family Systems, DARTT, and mindfulness‑based stress reduction to support a wide range of needs and experiences.

"Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic approach designed to address trauma and stress-related disorders by focusing on the connection between the mind and body. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, SE works with the nervous system to release stored trauma and restore balance. Instead of revisiting traumatic memories directly, it emphasizes awareness of bodily sensations, helping individuals process and resolve the physical effects of trauma gently and effectively.

This method is particularly beneficial for those experiencing symptoms like chronic stress, anxiety, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It provides tools to build resilience and regain a sense of safety and control."

"EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a structured therapeutic approach designed to help individuals process and resolve traumatic memories. It uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones, to activate both sides of the brain while focusing on distressing memories or emotions. This process helps reframe and reduce the emotional intensity of those memories, fostering resilience and emotional healing.

EMDR is particularly effective for treating trauma and PTSD, but it can also be beneficial for anxiety, depression, and other emotional challenges. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on the brain's natural ability to heal by creating new associations and reducing the emotional grip of painful experiences."

In your initial session, your therapist will take time to understand your background, what led you to seek therapy, and the goals you’d like to focus on. You will also be able to ask questions about the counseling process so you feel informed and at ease as you begin building a connection that feels supportive and safe.

A counseling session typically lasts 50-60 minutes.

We currently offer private pay services. Our clinic is in the process of expanding insurance options and completing credentialing with select insurance plans. Kathy accepts Quartz Insurance and Dean Health Plan as a contracted provider at The Psychology Clinic, and we anticipate offering additional in‑network options here as our credentialing progresses.
